Tucker's Toy-Box

Amazing Amazon Baby Toys for Early Play (0+)

March 16, 2021

Okay, we’ve settled into a semi-routine. At least I know how to latch him on to feed now. I have showered once this week. Now, how do I entertain this tiny adorably loud little squishsicle? If you’re anything like me, the first few weeks are just full of snuggles and sniffing the baby’s head; however, from a developmental standpoint, it’s important that babies start to “play” at an early age, and finding toys that can actually entertain an itty-bitty one is a challenge. I honestly got lucky, I happened to find a few toys right off the bat that worked well for Tuck. Below are our top recommendations for early play!

Baby Einstein Ocean Glow Sensory Shaker

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Okay listen, this little thing was and still is the #1 toy in our household. I am an avid Harry Potter fan and I take magic very seriously, so you can trust me when I say that “Jelly”, as well call him, is flipping magical. I originally found this little guy while shopping at Target and almost passed him up because I thought he was a little heavy. Flash-forward about 2 months, this was the first toy I really pulled out of the toy-box and I’ll be damned if it wasn’t an absolute freaking win. I’m being serious when I say that Tucker will be crying and we can wave this little jellyfish wand around and he stops. He literally just stops crying. I’ll provide my pros & cons below, but honestly, don’t even bother reading them. Just buy this thing, you won’t be sorry.

pros:

  1. It’s magic
  2. Baby loves the big eyes, they really do encourage “babbling”
  3. Helps encourage holding his head up during tummy-time
  4. Light & sound are not too obnoxious

cons:

  1. It is a little heavy for baby, at 4 months old he can just now kind of hold it
  2. It’s hard plastic so if baby can shake it around, they might whack themselves in the head
  3. It does not have a continuous sound/light feature, so you have to bump it every few seconds to keep it on

Baby Einstein Glow & Discover Light Bar

Rating: 4 out of 5.

My baby LOVES to kick. My ribs could attest to this fact during pregnancy and my doctor can attest to it because while she was delivering him via c-section, she yelled out “I haven’t even gotten him out yet and this boy is kicking me!”. So, we were prepared for the kicks. This little do-dad was a big win for his wild rambunctious feet flailing, even at an early age. If you have a kicker, you will both enjoy this.

He took a little break from kicking to have his photo taken

pros:

  1. Lights, sounds and buttons all function well
  2. Customizable sounds and volume (a big plus for the parents!)
  3. Baby can easily activate due to large flat buttons

cons

  1. Since this is really meant as a tummy-time toy, it can be difficult to stand upright for kicking (pro tip: I used 3M stickies and stuck it to the side of our fireplace, but the same concept would work against a wall as well)

Warmies Microwavable Lavender Scented Alligator

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

Awww, this little stuffie makes my heart happy. In the early days of soothing a newborn, this gator really came in handy for all of us. If you’ve ever used the microwavable neck tube thingies, then you have an idea about what this is. It’s a lavender filled stuffed animal, that you warm up and lay across baby’s belly. I think most of our pictures with toys include our Warmie, Chomp. This was the first toy Tucker ever held onto with his little baby hands. So cute.

pros

  1. So soft
  2. Baby loves to cuddle it
  3. Lavender smells great and only takes 30 seconds to warm up

cons

  1. After a few warms the lavender is less noticeable and it tends to smell “hot” upon first removing from microwave

The Play Gym by Lovevery

Rating: 5 out of 5.

If you’ve done any searching for baby toys, I’m sure you’ve come across this one before. I requested this for Christmas from my mom and she was totally unimpressed by it’s appearance because she thought it looked boring, but she was the first to admit that this is the most incredible baby gym after seeing Tucker become immediately enamored with it. This was the first place he did some independent play, and this momma was so proud! If you need a baby gym, this one is one of the most expensive, but it’s so worth it. The materials are high quality and the developmental aspects are truly impressive.

He loved it on day #1 and still loves it today. That’s a parenthood win.

pros

  1. Beautiful design that doesn’t distract from your home decor
  2. Truly impressive developmental aspects
  3. Baby really enjoys independent play

cons

  1. Honestly, none.

Tiny Love Stroller Arch

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

When they say this arch will attach to ANYTHING, they mean it. We have attached it to a stroller, a bassinet, a carseat, a changing table, and a bouncer seat…which is where it typically lives these days. Other than the compatibility, the best thing about this arch is the little faces. I don’t know about all kids, but mine really loves exaggerated cartoon faces and he will babble and talk at them for ages. For the price point, this arch really performs well.

pros

  1. Attaches to literally anything
  2. Baby loves to babble at the cartoon faces
  3. Provides extended periods of entertainment for littles

cons

  • In fairness we use this thing every day so we’ve probably worn it out; however, it has lost some of it’s “stay-up-ability” and will kind of fall over if baby pulls on it very hard.
